Although he’s best known as the drummer of the excellent band Durand Jones & The Indications, American soul artist Aaron Frazer has released an inventive second solo album, Into the Blue, peppered with references to the music that inspires him. With his graceful touch and falsetto voice, he ventures into many soul subgenres to assemble a record with a very modern structure. He experiments with some pulsating production on the title track, takes on a crooner vibe, and even a lover-boy persona, without confining himself to any one of these styles. Frazer also features tributes to great names like Timmy Thomas, sampling the drum machine from his song "Why Can't We Live Together" on the beautiful track "Dime," or when he gently shifts toward a more electronic feel on "Fly Away." In 11 brilliantly dense tracks, Aaron Frazer offers a continuity to the music of Durand Jones, whilst bringing his own themes and personal experiences to the lyrics, without falling into the mold of generic love songs.
