When Infinity first hit the crates in 1998, the young Canadian, discovered alongside Steve Vai, was already making an impression via his project, Strapping Young Lad (whose album City is simply one of the best extreme metal records of all time), and their incredible Ocean Machine: Biomech, released the year prior. The anniversary edition of this work is above all a chance to rediscover a remastered version of a monument that is as flamboyant as it is fabulous, often difficult to follow, and for which, for the first time in his life, the artist decided to go behind the booth and produce himself, not without difficulty.
Infinity is neither a rock album, nor a prog rock record. It feels more like a kind of ramshackle patchwork of wildly brilliant ideas whose apparent lack of cohesion is compensated by a creative madness that holds onto the listener from beginning to end, from the frantic, badass rock of “Bad Devil” to the wacky “Ants” (on which certain flourishes are evocative of Strapping Young Lad), closing with the most airy and pop-like of the tracks, “Noisy Pink Bubbles”. An unsettling and intoxicating trip that brings forward the flaws of a man who is at once fragile and hyperactive, for whom music appears to be the only thing keeping him alive and out of hospital…or not (at the time, he had just returned from a brief stay in a psychiatric ward, during which he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder). A quarter of a century later, Devin is doing much better, thankfully.
Not content with simply rereleasing this key album that marked his career, Townsend has added no less than seven bonus tracks to this 25th anniversary edition, including ones from his EP Christeen as well as several acoustic tracks such as a version of “Sister,” a song originally available on Ocean Machine. Good on him for retracing his steps. This is an anthology record that deserved to be dusted off. © Chief Brody/Qobuz
