A huge fan of the classic piano/bass/drum trio, Enrico Pieranunzi has now introduced the world to his new musical project: a collaboration with two other European jazz stars (French drummer André Ceccarelli and Danish double bassist Thomas Fonnesbæk). At the age of 72, the great pianist, who’s often described as the European answer to Bill Evans, seems invigorated by the enthusiasm of this unique line-up. His understated mastery gives way to piano melodies that are nothing short of poetic and maintain all the elegance that’s so characteristic of him. Pieranunzi always chooses the right note. There’s nothing wasteful about this fluid music that always utilises its emotional potential despite its tendency to flirt with romanticism. Here, the pianist favours a playing style that’s even purer than usual… Throughout Something Tomorrow, released on the Danish label Storyville Records, the swing rhythm is never relegated to the background. This music is sure to get feet tapping and heads nodding, as the listeners get lost in the fun these three men are having. You’ll be smiling through every solo. The album closes with a cover of Kurt Weill and Ira Gershwin’s This Is New, but the whole album can be described as classic and classy. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
