'Live' Bullet is the perfect album to illustratethe difference between "an overnight sensation" and "a breakthrough." While Bob Seger (and the Bob Seger System) had been putting out records since 1968, those releases made Seger a sensation in and around Detroit and the Midwest but largely failed to make a dent in the larger consciousness of American rock crowds. But Seger's workmanlike approach to rock 'n' roll meant that he and his bands gigged nonstop in venues large and small for years, becoming one of the most fearsome and effective live acts around. So it was something of a no-brainer to put him and his band on stage at Detroit's Cobo Hall, press record, and capture the lightning in a bottle that was the Silver Bullet Band circa 1975. Ostensibly done to quickly capitalize on the Top 50 success of "Katmandu" from 1975's Beautiful Loser, Bullet ended up becoming the breakthrough album that turned the rest of America onto the magic that Detroit had known about for years.

While 'Live' Bullet spawned no hugely successful singles of its own, it was quickly and warmly embraced by fans of "real rock 'n' roll" thanks to its unbridled energy and the shockingly fine-tuned performances of Seger and his band, which easily balanced loose soulfulness and tight-as-a-tick playing. Like all of Seger's live shows, Bullet is stocked deep with cover versions, and it barrels out of the gate with "Nutbush City Limits"—during which Seger famously talks about how he's known how great Detroit audiences have always been. Takes on numbers by Van Morrison ("I've Been Working"), Bo Diddley (a killer "Bo Diddley Medley"), and Chuck Berry ("Let It Rock/Little Queenie") get unmistakably (if respectfully) Seger-ized. There are plenty of originals too, and while some slink around midtempo grooves—"Travelin' Man," "Turn the Page"—the vast majority of the material is breathlessly and unapologetically electric.

Whether it's early Seger material like "Heavy Music" and "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man" or the absolutely barnstorming "Get Out of Denver," Bullet is a fantastic showcase of just how powerful and versatile Seger is as a songwriter, tidily summarizing the best of his (largely unknown) work from the late '60s and early '70s. Of course, many of the studio versions of 'Live' Bullet's best tracks aren't currently available on their original albums (Back in '72, Seven, Mongrel, and the all-covers Smokin' O.P.'s have been out of print for years), and one can understand why Seger prefers to have Bullet be the canonical version of this material, since not only was this the way that most people were introduced to these songs, but they also sound undeniably awesome. © Jason Ferguson/Qobuz
